Unlocking the Secrets of Successful Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher conferences are not always easy for parent nor teacher.  A poor report from the teacher can create upset in the family.

Parents can feel like they are failing their child.

Teachers do complain to parents and parents will defend their child.  It's can quickly become a no-win situation.

As an educator with over 13 years of experience, including owning my own school and serving as a principal, I've always believed that focusing on a student's strengths and abilities is key to their growth and success.

Teachers, who spend a significant amount of time with students, play a crucial role in nurturing those strengths. With mid-year parent-teacher conferences on the horizon, it's a perfect time to engage in productive discussions. I've put together six questions that can guide your conversations and help you gain valuable insights into your child's educational journey.

1. What have you observed as the  strengths and weaknesses in my child this school year?

2. How can I, as a parent, nurture and celebrate these strengths at home to reinforce their positive growth?

3. Can you share some of the achievements or actions my child has taken recently?

4. Are there any specific strategies or activities that can further amplify my child's positive contributions in the classroom and at home?

5. Do you have any insights or noteworthy moments in my child's academic progress or well-being that you'd like to highlight?

6. How can we foster a collaborative relationship to ensure my child's continued success while I remain the primary source of guidance and support?

Make a plan with the teacher and be sure to acknowledge any frustrations the teacher may have with your child.  One of the greatest ways to ensure your child's success for the school year is to create a great relationship with the teacher.  A combative relationship will only end up hurting the child.  Public Relations is part of a parent's job in creating an unbreakable family.
